Our History
Originating with beer brewery, inn and agriculture
In 1800, Martin Bilharz built the Gasthaus zum Kranz at what is now Offenburger Str. 18. The builder was a brewer, innkeeper and farmer.
His son, Maximilian Bilharz, later took over the family home and continued running the business. At that time, the house also served as a transshipment point for freight wagons. In 1806, even Her Royal Highness Louise stayed overnight at our inn.
Brewery expansion
In 1863, the brewer Peter Scheidel married the daughter of the house, Hermine Bilharz. Peter Scheidel and his son Franz Heinrich Scheidel mechanized the brewery.
In 1921, Franz Xaver Scheidel married Emma Bürkle from Wagenstadt. Together they continued to run the brewery until after World War I. Due to a war injury and the severe economic recession at the time, the brewery was closed.
Beer depot and present-day restaurant
From 1929 until his death in 1953, Franz Xaver Scheidel independently managed the beer depot, supplying his remaining brewery customers with Kronenbier. From 1953 to 1977, his wife Emma Scheidel and their two children, Franz Josef and Gerda, jointly ran the inn, the farm, and the beer depot. They also traded in agricultural products (agricultural warehouse). In addition to the beer garden, they built the first modern gas station in Kenzingen.
In 1977, Franz Josef Scheidel and his wife Agnes took over the business.
The mixed business was divided in 1987. Son Martin Scheidel and his wife Inka took over the beverage distribution, while son Franz Richard and his wife Hildegard have been managing the restaurant and hotel since 1983.
